American Computer Giant IBM decided to have some parts manufactured in Japan on a trial basis.
In the contract while writing specifications, they had set the standard that they will accept only three defective pieces per 10,000 pieces. Otherwise the whole consignment of 10000 parts would be rejected.
When the first consignment came from Japan to IBM there was a letter accompanying it.
"We, the Japanese people, had a hard time in understanding American business contract & practices. However, the three defective parts per 10,000 pieces have been separately manufactured at our end to meet the specifications of contract.
Those three have been included in the consignment in a separate package mentioning - *Defective pieces as required; not for use.* Hope this meets your requirement."
